A Sustainable Manifesto

As part of Green Action Week 2024, Idec, the Institute for Consumers Protection from Brazil, produced a Manifesto and film advocating for socio-environmental justice and a sustainable future. These works reflect the urgent need for changes in dominant modes of production and consumption, promoting practices aligned with a society in which social, environmental, and climate safeguards go hand in hand with ancestral knowledge.

Green Action Week: West Africa

Our West African colleagues focused on filling critical gaps in nutrition, food safety and environmental awareness in Green Action Week 2024. In Benin, campaigns focused on household food security, in Ivory Coast, urban biodiversity was highlighted as a key element of climate regulation, in Niger, cassava consumption was encouraged and in Senegal, the focus was on food safety and hygiene.

Campaigning for Sustainable Resource

The Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) hosted a hands-on workshop on natural cooling methods and launched a seed-sharing initiative to promote energy savings and sustainability.
Consumer Lebanon ran an innovative water conservation campaign via WhatsApp and social media, engaging women and youth in saving water despite the challenges of a war zone.
The Consumer Council of Zimbabwe’s “Bring a Bag Campaign” encouraged reusable bags to reduce plastic waste and pollution, offering workshops to create eco-friendly bags from old t-shirts.

Green Action Week participants focus on renewable energy solutions

The production of energy from non-renewable fossil fuel resources is not sustainable and the production, generation and distribution of energy is a primary driver of greenhouse gas emissions, which are causing climate change. While there is a shift towards the use of renewable energy sources (wind, solar, hydropower), the transition is not happening fast enough to mitigate climate change. Several participants of the 2023 Green Action Week focused their campaigns on supporting the transition to renewables.
