Stories of Systemic Change

Participants in previous Green Action Week campaigns have found creative and impactful ways to demonstrate the need for and benefits of sharing communities. See some of our campaign stories below.

Sharing Stories of Change

There is an urgent need to tell different stories from different cultures and contexts to counter dominant stories in the media. Telling persuasive stories about how to create change through sharing communities is key to bringing about sustainable consumption and a better world for all.

Citizen consumer and civic Action Group (CAG) brought together 250 people in a webinar for their Green Action Week activity to launch a comic book, discuss storytelling and announce the winners of essay writing and storytelling competitions.

Working With Youth

It is critical that we encourage and support youth in taking up leadership roles in calling for a change to current unsustainable systems as it is youth that will have to live with the consequences of decisions made today. Their voices need to be recognised and respected.

Consumer Voice in India chose young influencers to co-create and lead their anti-waste campaign against single-use plastics. The influencers created their own graphics, videos and campaigns drawing on their followers for support.

Sharing Natural Resources

Seed is a natural resource that has played a central role in community and cultural life for thousands of years. It is therefore far more than an agricultural input, but has a history, stories of use and knowledge attached to it related to its uses and significance.

In Malaysia, Consumers Association Penang organised a Seeds Sharing Fair to promote collaborative consumption. Visitors to the fair were introduced to various herb and vegetable seeds and able to swap seeds. The organisation also organised monthly natural farming training sessions and set up a chemical-free demonstration farm.

Combining Skills for Collective Good

When people and communities work together they can solve many challenges and help to bring about better lifestyles and livelihoods for all. One way to do this is to contribute one’s skills to community projects.

In Rwanda, the Rwanda Consumers Rights Protection Organization organised community groups to build sheds for livestock and manure sharing to support environmentally friendly agriculture. Groups were organised into skill-sharing collectives to care for the animals, distribute the manure and work in kitchen gardens.

Using Resources Sustainably

We urgently need to reduce global usage of resources like fossil fuels – but must do this without further marginalising those who already are not using enough. We need a fair/just energy transition that is inclusive and delivers equitable benefits.

Coletivo Ecologista Jalisca in Mexico explored the issue of energy for their activity exploring a more sustainable energy future for their community through participatory photo essays and video storytelling. Their work resulted in a coalition campaign with other groups across the country calling for the adoption of sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels.
