Green Action Week Participants Focus on Solutions for
Renewable Energy
The production of energy from non-renewable fossil fuel resources is not sustainable and the production, generation and distribution of energy is a primary driver of greenhouse gas emissions, which are causing climate change. While there is a shift towards the use of renewable energy sources (wind, solar, hydropower), the transition is not happening fast enough to mitigate climate change. Several participants of the 2023 Green Action Week focused their campaigns on supporting the transition to renewables.
Renewable Energy Campaigns 2023
In Cabo Verde, the Associação para Defesa do Consumidor built a biodigester and trained local women food producers to manage the technology. It also produced and broadcast three micro-programmes on television and radio explaining how biogas digesters worked and the environmental benefits of using them. In Fiji, the Consumer Council of Fiji, planted 200 trees and distributed 40 solar lights to illustrate the need to transition away from fossil-fuel energy to renewable and sustainable alternatives.
In India, Consumer Voice used its campaign, conducted with the Vrikshit Foundation, to empower consumers to adopt more sustainable energy practices. It held workshops with women and young girls in Sanjay Enclave, New Delhi, and with students in Rohini, New Delhi to promote the use of energy-efficient appliances and adoption of more sustainable consumption patterns.
