The Vision
The vision is of a community where local seed banks are established and supported, enabling farmers to access and plant quality indigenous seeds. Foods are stored efficiently to minimise wastage, and farmers can earn a sustainable livelihood. The adoption of fuel-saving technologies for cooking is envisioned, ensuring environmental sustainability. Families have access to balanced local foods, and the community is well-sensitized to appreciate and consume indigenous crops.
About PELUM Uganda
PELUM Uganda was established in 1995 and it is part of the PELUM Association, a regional network of more than 250 civil society organisations in East, Central and Southern Africa. It works steadfastly to improve the livelihoods of small- scale farmers and the sustainability of rural communities, through the fostering of ecological land use management. Core objectives are the sharing of skills and knowledge related to good practices and techniques, undertaking research and demonstration projects and advocating for policies that better support small-scale farmers.
2023 Campaign
Indigenous plants are resilient and adapted to local conditions. They are often neglected and underutilised, and yet play a crucial role in ensuring a sustainable future food supply. Pelum Uganda’s campaign focused on growing traditional knowledge amongst youths regarding the production, utilisation and conservation of these plants. They engaged with the media and organised an awareness-raising bike race. An exhibition was held where plant species were showcased and plant exchanges took place. Cooking demonstrations and food tasting were also conducted to shift mindsets.
